i smoke, but i try not to be one of those people who do and just reek of it all the time and blow it in people's faces wherever they go. i don't smoke in my house and if i think i smell like smoke, i will cover myself in some sort of cologne and i shower and wash my hair a lot. i don't think i smell like it too often because some people have this "omg, you smoke???" look on their face whenever i tell them i need to go have a cigarette...

I hate smoking. Blah. It makes me all loopy. But seriously, I think it's awful. My Mom and brother smoke. Not a good thing. But onto brighter smilies! |

I've never smoked. Even though people know its not healthy, they still do it though. I used to work at the Cancer Institute in NJ and tons of people used to smoke right outside during lunch.... kinda ironic lol

i don't think anyone necessarily has a right to come down on anyone for smoking. it's a bit hypocritical to call smokers out for being unhealthy if you eat fatty/fast foods, drive or ride in cars that are destroying our environment, don't exercise on a regular basis, if you're not in the specific weight group for your age/height, etc. etc. etc. what i'm saying is that no one is 100% healthy and no one takes care of their body 100% of the time, so why come down on one specific thing people do that's not good for them? i have my reasons for smoking. sure, stress isn't a good excuse and there are plenty of other healthy things i could be doing, but lighting up is my problem and i plan on quitting a few years down the road before i give myself cancer or emphysema(both of which usually take 10+ years to even begin to develop). but the point is, if someone starts a topic on what we eat, there's no reason to say things like "you eat food that's not organic? that's disgusting and unhealthy" and this isn't much different. sorry to rant and this actually stems from an argument i got into with some twit i knew, and Cycle 9 when Tyra decided everyone was going to be "healthy" and "set a good example" for the younger viewers by not smoking. srsly. because catfights, drama and constant bitching sets such a good example. lol --Last edited by Jonny-boy on 2008-12-27 17:08:12 --

I don't think its a problem for people to smoke honestly. I do think its a problem for oncologists, pediatricians, and cancer researchers to smoke right outside the building where patients (including children) are battling cancer. It's ironic b/c on one hand they are telling people its unhealthy and the cause of their current state, and on the other they are doing it right outside. The issue of how long it takes to manifest the health risks is debatable, and definitely not on par with eating processed foods. Sorry if it sounds like I'm coming down on smokers, but I just think its hard to see young people smoking after seeing otherwise healthy children die from non-cigarette related cancer. It seems unfair to me. my 2 cents.

I'm with you Connan, it's a really rediculous thing to try and wrap my mind around. As for lighting up being "your problem" Jonny, it's far more than that. There's no way to keep that smoke to yourself even if every time you smoked you were alone. I don't think Tyra was in the right to force the girls to quit smoking, but I do think everyone has the right to come down on smokers. It debilitates one's self and one's environment so what's there not to get after? The way I see it the only reason you feel the need to defend it is the pro-tobacco propoganda we've been eating up since we were infants. Self-mutilation comes in many forms and I'd prefer if others chose a method that was only self inflicting (not that I want anyone to go through something of this caliber). |

oh i agree with the irony that those people smoke outside the building and life is unfair in that people who don't smoke are still at risk of getting cancer. but life isn't fair and i hope one day there is cure, mostly so those who are diagnosed when they haven't done anything to themselves to cause it. my aunt had ovarian cancer a few years ago and now she just got diagnosed with liver cancer and going through chemo is horrible for her.
my point was that everyone does things that are unhealthy to themselves and the environment. you think it's okay to come down on those who smoke because it can affect those around them, but do you drive or ride in cars? i'm pretty sure you'd want to defend yourself if those people who are out to save the environment came down on you for helping to destroy it and society by putting more pollution in the air, causing people all over the world to become sick and unhealthy. it's the same thing.

I can see how you're trying to approach this logically, but it just doesn't work. It sounds like Sheena saying being a vegetarian doesn't make sense because vegetables have feelings too. Those comparisons (cigarettes to a car) are so beyond dillusional. Yes we all are royally fucking over the environment, so does that mean we should fuck it as hard as we can? No. It's not the same thing. Automobiles are pretty much a necessity to exist in this world, tobacco is a complete leisure item. To wipe out the problem that are cars would be to eliminate the access people have to their places of employment, and chaos would ensue. The only way to instantly fix that pollution would be to surgicly implant titanium legs to each persons torso and have them run on batteries. Seeing as how that's not really an option and for people to just stop smoking is a totally viable option and choice it is so very much two different things. |

Haha Mel! That made me chuckle for about 10 seconds! Well, I gotta say that I, somewhat, agree with Jonny-boy on the whole "coming down on" someone who smokes and not someone who eats fast foods; to a certain extent, I suppose. If someone overweight were to say, "You're going to die if you keep smoking", then I think the smoker has the right to reply, "You're going to die if you keep eating all those cheeseburgers". But if that same overweight person were to say something like, "Smoking is horrible because it messes with other's lungs", then I think they are in the right to do so. (sorry that I couldn't come up with more clever quotes :P) As to the whole Sheena/vegetarian thing, it makes sense to me. Hehe! I think plants do have feelings (like animals) just that the conditions plants are put through to eat are "better" than the conditions put onto an animal. Resulting in me just eating the ones that have a 'luxurious' life, hehe.
