... because I can't save it anywhere. I found out the problem with my lappy - the hard drive is fried. Soooo looks like I'm stuck doing my term paper on the lab computers. The only problem is you cant' save on the lab computers, so I have to either do it all in one shot or find an alternative. Since my USB stick is currently being used to back up my files, I might as well just save it here.

FYI, the paper is an object analysis that is NOT supposed to be formal essay style. We're only supposed to cite our course textbook. My assignment was to analyze a pop song and refer to how it contributes towards Adorno's theory of popular music controling the masses.

“Art is mind, and mind does not at all need to feel itself obligated to the community, to society…” – an excerpt from Thomas Mann’s Dr. Faustus

If a work of art is not created with the intent of pleasing a demographic, then one can reserve the right to deem any pop song, mainstream movie, or television show as something other than a work of art.  Assuming that Thomas Mann is correct, and mainstream popular culture is simply a moneymaking vehicle, State of Shock’s 2007 single “Money Honey” would be the epitome of just that.  In examining the creation, structure, and the reception of the song, it could even be said that “Money Honey” represents the antithesis of art.
The song was the first physical single released by State of Shock, and won a Canadian Music Award for “Best Rock Song.”  Though describing a band and/or song as “rock” would normally imply some originality, the band’s sound is undoubtedly described as the generic “Nickel-Creed” sound (a slang term amongst youth to describe a sound similar to demi-hardcore bands such as Nickelback and Creed).  Ironically enough, State of Shock toured with both Nickelback and their near-identical American counterpart Theory of a Deadman, and the corresponding video for “Money Honey” contains footage of the band while they were on tour with the former.  The video is simply a montage of footage of the band, with no cliché music video “sub-plot.”  And much like the video, the song accomplishes nothing. Examining the lyrics, there is a distinct formula to the lyrics, with the lines “So far from where we started/so far from what we wanted,” “I’ve made mistakes that I can’t erase/I’ve made mistakes,” and “Yeah, yeah, yo/Yeah, yeah, yo/I know you know” repeated profusely.  To top this off, the chorus is simply a repetition of two lines: “If I had more money honey, would you love me love me love me/If I wasn’t just somebody like me (like me)” which, lyrically have little to nothing to do with the rest of the song.  The astounding thing is that now that the preceding lines are the lines which comprise 90% of the song.

It's not done yet, obviously.
But you guys should look up Adorno. The man said some interesting shit.

The repetitive lyrics are not compensated for in any way by the repetitive music.  The song further emphasizes the condescending mentality one has towards musicians; anyone can pick up a guitar, learn three or four chords, and pump out a hit song.  The chords in “Money Honey” follow the typical pattern of relative minor, fourth, tonic, fifth (a variation on the most common tonic, fifth, relative minor, fourth).  The melody on top of said chords is inoffensive and simple, and almost identical from verse to chorus (with the only difference being that the latter is sung an octave higher).
